A Club For All Senses

A modern tribute to ancient Occidental philosophy, Feng Yu's project in Shenzen, China is aptly named "The Oriental Club - Settling Down." This space is a haven of tranquility, drawing inspiration from traditional gardening techniques such as bamboo groves and winding pathways. Mixing all four elements of earth, air, fire, and water into one serene space allows for meditative contemplation of nature's beauty in a clean, polished framework. A courtyard of water reflects a patio that overlooks a wall of rock giving way to a thin, white covered path dotted with holes in intricate designs. The house itself also has small holes in unpredictable places, and the wooden walls of the upper tea deck have designs burned via hot iron into the exposed wood posts, creating elusive dreamlike scenes. With this project, Feng encourages us to reflect on the relationship between humans, nature, and the universe.
