Chinese Stuff in Frankfurt

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Life in China has changed rapidly in recent decades, just as our idea about what's made in China. Beijing's Popcorn Idea Factory (with a name that has both "pop" and "factory" in it, you've got to be a bit Warholian in outlook) wants us to take note of the everyday in Chinese life in its Essentially Chinese series. Chinese Stuff, a new exhibit at Frankfurt's Museum of Applied Arts was inspired by a Popcorn Idea Factory book and features the things Chinese use in their daily lives: Flower-decorated thermos flasks, single-slit baby pants or electric fly catchers. The idea is that these pop cultural artifacts say more about China today than a shelf of Ming vases—no offense to Ming vases.
