Completed in 2000, Peter Kunz's Garagen in Herden, Switzerland, is a millennium project that celebrates the motorcar; it immortalizes four-wheeled collectibles and garage with bold blocks of concrete in the rolling Swiss countryside.

In 1999, a previous client came to Peter Kunz Architekter with a precipitous piece of land bought to store his collection of eight cars. Kunz responded with this beautiful Brutalist solution, designed to frame and display it’s mechanical contents. Five reinforced concrete cubes balance delicately on the hillside, half-buried. Four act as light wells to the space behind, the fifth being the entrance. To juxtapose the dark, rough concrete, the glazing is delicately inscribed with verses from artist Oliver Kühn on the relationship between the automobile and man.
