Cubism in Porto

In an old, charming city like Porto, the challenge to architects is often how to update historic buildings so that they remain useful. Preservation and protection is lovely, but if it produces unoccupied, derelict spaces, it can prove problematic. In downtown Porto, Portugal, there are numerous unoccupied, 18th century buildings, according to Portuguese architecture firm Ooda. With the Loios project at Largo dos Loios, Porto, Portugal, the firm has come up with an elegant, modern, sugarcube-like solution for an 18th century building. Sides of the cube, evidently, feature a kitchen and an office—with utilities running up the middle from unit to unit. We're not sure where the sleeping quarters are, but I'm sure they'll get to that. Completion is expected in 2013.
