It's official: London's Design Museum is vacating its Southbank, converted banana warehouse abode. Its future home will be the now-dormant Commonwealth Institute, a building with soaring ceilings and an open plan that's ideal for expansion.

Set to open in 2014, the new building triples the Design Museum's current square footage and allows curators to display more of the permanent collection alongside temporary exhibitions. The Institute's original 1960s exterior will receive a light upgrade, while British architect John Pawson, known for his clean, light-filled work, will focus on transforming the interior.

The new Design Museum's South Kensington location makes it an easy trek for tourists and locals alike, and with cool features that include a cafe and library, it will be hard to resist popping by and staying for tea.
