Event Recap | Revive Your Retreat

Monday, June 17th, 2013

We can hardly contain our excitement about designer Susan Fredman’s new project. In an effort to live sustainably and promote eco-friendly design, the Chicago-based interior designer and Stones Throw Builders are creating luxury homes from a surprising source—recycled shipping containers. The team’s first custom container cottage will be Fredman’s own home in Michigan's Harbor Country, which uses 10 containers and includes a guesthouse.

Fredman shared her vision for the project and led a tour of the in-progress container cottage at the ninth annual Revive Your Retreat event, held at her Harbor Country storefront. Not only did we jump at the chance to check out Fredman’s container home in person, but we were also thrilled to welcome guests and share our thoughts on green design trends as the opening presenter.

The event also included a green wall planting workshop with Cathy Litrofsky of Haute Botanics and a panel discussion on sourcing, reusing, and refinishing wood with craftsman from the Milwaukee-based 360 Degrees, local artisans, and Susan Fredman Design Group designers.

Best of all, proceeds from the event benefited Designs for Dignity, a Chicago-based design-recycling program that donates design materials—appliances, furnishings, and more—and services to local nonprofits.

Green has never looked (or felt) so good.
