Gitane is a restaurant in San Francisco that "incorporates regional flavor profiles from Spain, Portugal, Southern France and neighboring Morocco." Its name comes from the "modern freewheeling gypsy" and that distinctive influence runs rampant in the eclectic interior by Mr. Important Design.

All over the restaurant, walls are decorated in artwork from Turkey and the UK, Goya-esque tapestries, and Deborah Bowness hand-printed wallpapers. Custom lighting, two “pearl choker” chandeliers, and mix of antique lighting keep the space illuminated, while myriad tapestries are draped high and low. Putting the finishing touches on a wildly inventive interior are furnishings from Anthropolgie and Tom Dixon.

Every detail, down to the patterns on the bar stools, adds to the overall transportive effect. You'll feel as though you've walked into another era entirely, be it '50s, '60s or '70s. Textures and surfaces are in constant conversation, as smooth, reflective finishes run into weathered, vintage woods and craquelure. Next time you're in the Bay Area, stop by, and stay a while. And check out more of Mr. Important's amazing work on its website.
