Grim Reality of Time

Monday, May 14th, 2012

With modern folks increasingly reliant on digital devices such as their cell phones to tell time, British designer Crispin Jones decided he needed to refocus the purpose of the wristwatch for Mr Jones Watches. Our days are not measured by seconds and minutes, after all; they’re defined by routines and moments. When asked why many of his designs deal in the macabre (one, the Accurate, has an hour hand that says “remember” and a minute hand that reads you will die”), Jones cites a long tradition of art using clocks as symbols of death. “Time is inherently linked to death,” he says. “We will all eventually die, and each hour that passes is one less in our life.”
