Japanese Starbucks Sticks Out

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

This new Starbucks in Dazaifu, Fukuoka, Japan is not a low profile spot for a coffee, it serves visitors to one of the nation's major shrines, established in 919 A.D., centuries before discovery of the decaf Latté. Kengo, Kuma and Associates sought to harmonize the structure with the surrounding townscape. It features 2,000 sticklike parts, sometimes "woven" together with the aid of digital technology in the cavelike space. I love it, but can't help thinking I'd get a poke in the eye with my Green Tea.
