Krit-ical Color

Monday, March 19th, 2012

RISD grad Korakrit Arunanondchai may be working on an MFA at Columbia University, but he's no amateur when it comes to seeing his colors brought to life in the everyday marketplace. At 26, he's already stepped on to the international stage with designs for High Sierra daypacks, Dell laptops and Electrolites shoes.

Today, however, we're looking at the modest Bangkok-raised designer's more personal work: sculptural-painting installations which find him, as he suggests to us in an email, straddling fantasy and reality and the different systems of belief of his native and country of residence. Krit, which he goes by, may consider his fine art practice another effort entirely, but it isn't hard to see the design influence here—the day-glo, almost explosive patterns, in particular, seem to cry out for appropriation in fashion or otherwise. The next time you see a Krit, it might not be a gallery at all.
