What: La Condesa, a Mexican restaurant
Where: Austin, TX
When: 2009

La Condesa was recently nominated for a 2010 James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in the country, and it won the People’s Choice Award for best restaurant at 2009’s AIA Los Angeles Restaurant Design Awards. It's only fitting that La Condesa's design is equally top-notch, inside and out.

According to La Condesa's website:

"Inspired by the hip, bohemian Condesa neighborhood of Mexico City, and drawing on the bold flavors and vibrant colors of Mexico City, La Condesa is a collaboration of local designers, artists, and artisans. A cast-in-place concrete stair rises within the center of the restaurant to Malverde, a separate bar above. A vibrant collage of colorful Mexican billboard pieces anchors the dining space and provides a backdrop for the cascading light fixture made from off-the-shelf parts. Industrial materials, such as split concrete masonry block and raw steel, contrast with the warmth of wood and fabric to create a space that is rugged but finished, comfortable and engaging. Downstairs, is the historic beer vault, a remnant of an old general store on the site from the 1870s, restored and repurposed as unique storage for the restaurant"
