Growing up in the same town as the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, it’s not surprising that Paul Cunningham knows a thing or two about the game. As the founder of Leather Head Sports, he has madea successful business of crafting premium, hand-stitched leather balls from his in-home workshop just a few hours from where he—and, perhaps, baseball—was born.
“I’m from the mecca for baseball fans, which has been a very significant factor in my life,” says Cunningham, who worked as a photo editor for Major League Baseball Magazine for 13 years. Following that job was a brief stint as a senior craftsman at a baseball-glove company, but Cunningham soon decided to strike out on his own to craft artisan sports equipment.
“Leather had always been a hobby, but that’s when I really started to work on perfecting the vintage- style baseballs that had fascinated me when I was younger,” he says.
