Nostalgia: Indian iconography
Friday, March 9th, 2012
Most collections start innocently enough. Artist and teacher Matt Lee can attest to that. During his travels around India, where he now lives, Lee discovered a strangely charming matchbox with an image of a killer whale and text that read “Dolphin.” The kitschy collectible turned out to be the seed which spawned a full-fledged hobby. Lee now owns more than 450 matchboxes, each one a reminder of where he’s been—and what a tiny, disposable artifact can tell us about the history of a nation.
