Sagmeister & Walsh Join Forces

Design superstar Stefan Sagmeister certainly knows how to make a statement. 19 years ago, he sent out a postcard announcing the opening of his own studio with two Red Hot Chili Peppers-wearing socks-style photos of himself on it. Now 50, Sagmeister is ready to share the spotlight—and the postcard. May 31st, he announced that multidisciplinary designer Jessica Walsh, a two and a half year vet of his studio, will join him as partner in the newly dubbed firm, Sagmeister & Walsh.

This week’s announcement came with a similar imagery—featuring a naked Sagmeister in one image, and another featuring him next to a naked Walsh standing on a stack of magazines. It was, reportedly, her idea, not his, to do the full monty. Amid the varied reactions to the announcement from two Design Bureau faves, there's the somewhat amazing news that the apparently ambitious and capable 25-year-old Walsh has nabbed herself a prestigious partnership at a killer design firm.

It seems Walsh was often running the studio when Sagmeister was off on one of his sabbaticals, so it should be a smooth transition. Via Creative Review, Sagmeister explains how their roles at the firm will differ. '"The hope is that both if us will be involved in everything with perhaps me more involved in the self-generated projects and Jessica more in client-based work," Sagmeister says, although he insists that he has no plans to move away from client-based work entirely: "I have no desire to wander off and become an artist. I am very happy to be in the world of design," he says. Sagmeister will oversee larger corporate projects in a creative director role with Walsh managing the studio.”

To say that they’ve got the design community’s attention right now would be an understatement. We’re dying to know what Sagmeister & Walsh are going to think up next.

We emailed Walsh to find out more.

The announcement card for the partnership has gotten a lot of attention for the nude portrait, but I'm just kind of blown away that you are a partner at 24. Do you think the imagery has kind of overwhelmed that aspect of the news?
I'm 25! Of course the nudity was a big focus, but that was expected...

Do you think your clients will get it?
Yes so far all positive responses from our clients. I think most are aware we have always done things a bit differently...

What makes the studio such a great environment and why do you think you've done so well there?
Being a small studio we have the luxury to be picky and only take on work we really believe in, which is a huge advantage. Another great part of working at a small studio is that I love to do everything: design, art direction, photography, illustration, working with clients, and managing the studio. I've gotten to do a little of everything working here, which I love.

Most importantly, Stefan is amazingly talented, open minded and fun person to work with. Working here hasn't felt like a job, it's what I want to do every day.

What's on deck this summer for Sagmeister & Walsh?
So far we are working on an identity project, a poster design, books, and the new studio identity. Stefan has also been working hard on The Happy Film. We're also looking forward to doing a few fun self authored projects this summer.

Congrats!
Thank you, thank you!
