SOFA Chicago 2012
Thursday, November 1st, 2012
If you're like us, every weekend you probably ask yourself where you can get your sculpture objects and functional art fix. Chicago's in luck this weekend as the 19th SOFA fair takes over Navy Pier's Festival Hall Nov. 2-4. Nearly 70 art galleries and dealers from more than 10 countries are represented along with lectures and special exhibits by renowned museums, universities, and arts organizations. Cutting-edge design, particularly limited edition furniture, is an important focus of the event. “Design is one of the most eagerly anticipated aspects of the fair,” says SOFA director Donna Davies. “These works marry sculpture, material, and functional art while always pushing the boundaries of technique. These are forms that have grown out of the craft tradition but the artists are exploring and creating a new vocabulary for work that are at once inventive furniture and sculpture.” There's also a collection of works by established and emerging glass artists in celebration of the 50th anniversary of America’s Studio Glass Movement.
Tickets are $15 for one day and $25 for a three-day pass and include fair admission, lectures, and special exhibits and events. There's also a preview tonight from 7-9PM for $50. Visit the SOFA website for more information.
