The Coolest Drugstore Ever?

Monday, November 26th, 2012

Here in DB's hometown of Chicago, we could trip and land in a Walgreens, but not all of them look like this. The largest drugstore chain in the U.S. opened its second Chicago flagship last week—and it's a purdy one.

Walgreens spent two years working with the Commission on Chicago Landmarks to restore the historic Noel State Bank building in Bucktown, a 1919 neo-classical bank designed by Gardner C. Coughlen. The exterior has fresh ornamental terra cotta and pilasters topped with Corinthian capitals, and inside you'll find a beautiful coffered plaster ceiling decorated with griffins and a stained glass window with a six-point star design. The best part though is the original bank vault, a cast iron safe with old lockboxes repurposed to display vitamins.
