The Culturist: Jean de Merry’s 10th Anniversary

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Last Wednesday, June 8, 2011, designers Jean de Merry and Christian D. Maroselli marked the 10-year anniversary of their French-deco-inspired, made-to-order furniture line with a collaborative charity project and launch event at their LA flagship showroom.

For the project, “JDM-TEN,” Jean and Christian wanted to do something different, something that would commemorate, as Jean says, “the art of collaboration, which has ultimately been integral to our success as a brand.” The duo was able to showcase the philanthropic potential of design through the creation of limited-edition decorative art pieces for charity.

Late last year, Jean and Christian began working with a crew of creative influencers from varying artistic platforms, from fashion to art, to interior design and entertainment.  The idea was to bring 10 unique perspectives to the project, and ultimately, to get outside the box and create something unexpected. JDM-TEN became a truly diverse assortment of talent: Costello Tagliapietra, Oliver Furth, Katherine Heigl, Molly Isaksen, Joe Dahan of Joe’s Jeans, Karolina Kurkova, Kara Mann, Joel Morrison, Irene Neuwirth and Gregory Parkinson.

Each guest designer spearheaded their own limited-edition design of furniture, case good, or decorative art piece to be sold with 100% of the net proceeds going toward the charity of the artists’ choice.

From supermodel Karolina Kurkova’s sculptural floor lamp inspired by “motherhood and nature,” to Costello Tagliapietra’s biomorphic, glam-surrealist throne, these designers definitely delivered exciting, innovative forms for a brand that has always emphasized fine art in its furniture design.

The JDM-TEN show runs through September 2 at Jean de Merryʼs Melrose Place showroom in LA. For more information, visit www.jeandemerry.com.
