What State Do You Live In?

Monday, November 1st, 2010

On October 23, Dribbble user Geof Crowl posted a simple homage to his home state, Utah, along with the question, "What state do you live in?" Less than a week later, almost 400 responses came flooding in, with similar graphic odes to locations all over the world.

The "state" part of the question was interpreted liberally, as people created images and illustrations for countries, provinces, neighborhoods and cities. A simple question became a call to action, and a challenge to designers to distill the essence of their respective homes into a two-dimensional, four-sided format.

Dribbble, for those unacquainted, is an online community for designers ("players") to post works in-progress ("shots"). It's a modern, instant sounding board where designers can share feedback, encouragement and inspiration, or, as the site says, "Show and tell for designers in 120,000 pixels or less." On Dribbble, the state-related thread is a group activity referred to "playoffs"—shots with "rebounds" from multiple players. It's all playfully sports-themed, with "rookies" and "all-stars," letting graphic designers live out their wildest athletic dreams.

This project, which united a geographically varied group behind the basic idea of hometown pride, illustrates the power of Dribbble. How else might the site be used, and what are the inherent limitations (if any)?
