certifyD | The Certification Dialogue

Should there be a design certification to distinguish the trained pros from the wannabees?

Designer Esteban Pérez-Hemminger hatched the idea for certifyD as a thesis at Pratt Institute’s Graduate Communications Design program. He calls it "an open platform for discussion and dialogue" that advocates for "possibility within a flexible certification system; where education is fomented, experience is highlighted and accountability is built into the very fabric our our practice." Simply put, the idea is a "voluntary and flexible" certification system for the communications design industry in the USA. Pérez-Hemminger believes it would be built on inclusivity and help businesses and the public sector navigate the immensity of designers available. It's an idea, I'm guessing, that will immediately attract its own fans as well as detractors.

There's more to it, of course. certifyD's mission is "to advocate for the establishment of common benchmarks as the essence of a formal certification system within the communications design industry; creating a distinction, not a division, between the level of preparation, expertise and commitment among all practicing designers." Ultimately, the goal is "consummation of our field as a valued and responsible profession."

Good idea? You can hear both sides hash it out live in New York this month featuring panelists such Behance's Matias Corea and Tom Dolle.

certifyD is hosting a symposium for designers, students and professionals to talk about the viability of professional certification and weigh in on topics such as "Should the term designer be earned or is it open to anyone?" The event is open to the public.
