Contest: Grenade Lamps - Design Bureau

Hand Grenade Oil Lamps by Piet Houtenbos

Contest: Grenade Lamps

Monday, July 11th, 2011

If you've seen our most recent cover, you were probably like, "Awesome." And then you probably thought, "Wait, why is that hand grenade on fire? That's not how grenades work." And then, inevitably, "What kind of flossed-out pimp army is painting its weapons gold?"

They're Grenade Oil Lamps from New York-based designer Piet Houtenbos. They're made from actual US Army surplus grenades, and, as a result, are substantially hefty. The three shapes, despite their delicious namesakes (pineapple, lemon, etc.), are pure utilitarian design, manufactured to inflict a certain type of damage.

We're giving away a set of three in the "natural" finish (sorry, people who like shiny things), as well as some oil and a funnel to make things interesting. Retail value: $180.

To win, send an email to with the subject line: Grenade Lamp Contest.

Update: Contest has ended. Winner will be contacted shortly.
