House of Tales, Portugal

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

The tale of Casa do Conto (House of Tales), arts&residence, the design concept in the Cedofeita area of central Porto, Portugal is one that even a good PR firm could never dream up. A few years ago, the hotel had been completely restored by Pedra Líquida (Liquid Stone) to its historic state when it fell victim to a fire. The architects picked up and started again, took the skeleton of the building and let it suggest the new design. Even before I knew this, I got the feeling that Casa do Conto did a beautiful job of marrying the past with the present. Concrete is the main material of the interior, but here it is treated more like stone—carved into and given interesting textures. The ceilings literally tell the tale of the XIX Century Oporto House in text. And a mix of midcentury, contemporary and Art Deco furnishings combines to make the Casa a charming, welcoming place.
