Penguin Design Award

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Language and art are seldom as intertwined as they are on a Penguin paperback. All bookshop visitors who lay eyes on a Penguin publication immediately surrender their promise to never judge a book by its cover. With a sleek, classic, and occasionally outrageous aesthetic, a Penguin jacket is the ultimate addition to any aspiring artist’s portfolio.

Art and design students looking for a way to break into the publishing world need look no further than the annual Penguin Design Award contest. Students at the HND or degree level are eligible to submit a jacket cover of their own creation for One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. The more playful may submit a design for James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl, published by Puffin — Penguin’s children’s book division. The super-ambitious may submit to both. Details on the contest and its  fabulous yet functional prizes are here.
