Space Program: Mars
Thursday, May 17th, 2012
Beginning this week, sculptor and installation artist Tom Sachs takes his Space Program on a four week mission to Mars in the 55,000 square foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall. The meticulously crafted sculptures, made from simple available materials in the manner of bricolage, represent the component parts of a Mars mission—exploratory vehicles, mission control, launch platforms, suiting stations, recreational gear, even the Mars landscape. Sachs and his studio team of thirteen will man the installation and demo the tasks of the mission for the public. With the U.S. space program budget virtually gutted, Sachs show takes on a whole new meaning. It might be the closest we'll get to the red planet in our lifetime.
