By Sara Driscoll

With a busy schedule and two kids, interior de- signer and creator of SKP Designs Sondra Phillips needed a place to escape her hectic day-to-day of life. Given her professional resources and design savvy, she created her own space at home by adding a second-level master suite to her Crooked Lake, Michigan house.

“Having two kids means you find their things ev- erywhere. A whole floor to yourself gives you an escape from everything,” Phillips says. “Our goal was to make the master suite as meditative and relaxing as the spas we’ve gone to on vacation.”

The new suite includes vaulted ceilings, a custom headboard, and a Juliet balcony, which showcases the focal point and inspiration for the space. “Of course a great view of the lake was a priority,” Phillips says. A three-sided fireplace completed the relaxing experience. “You can see it from the tub, the bed, and seating area,” she says. A cozy (and kid-free) environment, indeed.

Bryan Hammel of Hammel Construction was the con- tractor tasked with bringing Phillips’ vision to life. This meant imbuing the suite with the zen-like quality she was after. “The thing that gives this suite its retreat feel is the fireplace and tub combo, along with the placement of the windows to give that great lake view,” he says. Sounds like a design mission accomplished.
