Holy overhaul. Catalonia-based architect David Closes deserves some serious praise for tastefully injecting new, modern life into this 18th-century church in a small town in the hilly Spanish countryside. The Santpedor City Council tasked Closes with integrating an auditorium and cultural center into the crumbling church while maintaining the original dimensions and preserving its historical integrity. Their styles may be centuries apart, but we think Closes' modern steel, glass, and lighting only seem to accentuate the ruined beauty of the old brick walls.
